Bio and Research Interest
Gustavo E. Fischman is a professor of educational policy and comparative education and the director of scholarly communication at the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation, Arizona State University. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he is a first-generation university graduate. He earned his BA in Education from the University of Buenos Aires and completed his MA and Ph.D. degrees in social sciences and comparative education at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Fischman is an internationally recognized scholar in comparative education and critical policy studies. His research examines issues related to Open Science, scholarly communication, global citizenship education, and sustainability. He studies how research is conceptualized, produced, used, accessed, and mobilized to address social, educational, and sustainability challenges. Currently, he is working on projects related to understanding how universities respond to the planetary crisis and how they utilize Open Science models of inquiry and assessment. Dr. Fischman has authored over 200 academic publications, as well as numerous commentaries and interviews. He has been a visiting scholar in several graduate programs across Europe and Latin America. Dr. Fischman has received many awards and honors, including being selected as a New Century Fulbright scholar (2010), a fellow of the International Academy of Education (2013), a fellow of the National Education Policy Center, and a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (2015). He was also appointed twice to the W. T. Fulbright Senior Scholar roster (2017-2020 and 2025-2028). In addition to his service on various editorial boards, he is the co-executive editor of AERA Open and a consulting editor for Education Review and Education Policy Analysis Archives. Among his well-known books are "Imagining Teachers: Rethinking Teacher Education and Gender," co-authored with Eric M. Haas, and "Dumb Ideas Won't Create Smart Kids," and "Made in Latin America: Open Access, Scholarly Journals, and Regional Innovations," co-edited with Juan P. Alperin.
